Bioplastics based on amyloid fibrils and biodegradable polymers

: Patent Patent EP4089149A1: Patent WO2022238244A1: Patent

Together with my co-inventors, Dr. Bagnani and Prof. Mezzenga, we embarked on a project to develop bioplastics composed of amyloid fibrils from different protein waste sources, such as whey, rapeseed cake, soy whey, and okara.

By winning the Swiss Food Ecosystems NTN Innovation Booster campaign on green, clean, and smart plastic materials for food packaging, this idea received great attention within the community.

We filed a patent (EP4089149A1, WO2022238244A1), and currently, my co-inventors and I are pushing this idea beyond the lab scale by collaborating with strategic Swiss and international companies and investors to launch a startup.

Proof of concept and converting half a ton of soy whey to 1 km of bioplastics
